US Military Aircraft Exit Spain After Government Blocks Use for Iran Operations
Fifteen United States military aircraft have departed from Spain’s Rota and Morón air bases following Madrid’s decision not to allow its jointly operated facilities to be used for attacks on Iran.
According to flight tracking data from FlightRadar24, the aircraft left southern Spain shortly after the United States and Israel launched coordinated weekend strikes on Iran.
Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed that Spanish territory would not be used for operations against Iran, stressing that the bases operate under Spanish sovereignty despite being jointly managed with the US.
Spain Reaffirms Sovereignty Over Military Bases
Albares stated that Spanish bases “are not being used for this operation and will not be used for anything not included in the bilateral agreement with the United States or that is not in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.”
Spain has openly condemned the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, positioning itself differently from several Western allies. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government has taken a firm diplomatic stance, which could further strain relations with Washington.
Defence Minister Margarita Robles clarified that the aircraft stationed in Spain were permanently based there and primarily consisted of aerial refuelling tankers.
Aircraft Movements Tracked Across Europe
FlightRadar24 data showed:
- Nine aerial refuelling tankers departed from Morón Air Base on Sunday and headed towards Germany.
- At least seven aircraft landed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, a key US military hub in Europe.
- Two aircraft left Rota naval base for southern France.
- Four additional flights departed from Rota, though their routes were not publicly visible.
Many of the aircraft were identified as Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling planes, critical for long-range air operations.
UK Adjusts Position on Base Usage
Britain initially declined to allow its military bases to be used in strikes on Iran. However, on Sunday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized their use under what he described as “collective self-defence.”
Spain’s refusal highlights diverging European responses to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Growing Diplomatic Ripples in Europe
Spain’s firm position underscores broader divisions within Europe regarding involvement in Middle East conflicts. While some NATO allies have aligned with Washington’s strategy, Madrid has emphasized adherence to international law and UN principles.
As tensions between the US, Israel and Iran continue to escalate, the movement of military assets across Europe suggests ongoing strategic recalibration.
