Teams from the Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSL) and the National Security Guard’s (NSG) bomb disposal squad on Sunday visited the Nowgam police station premises in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, to examine the site of a deadly accidental blast that killed nine people and injured several others on Friday.
Authorities have sealed the police station and its surrounding area to facilitate a thorough investigation and preserve key evidence. Officials said the teams from CFSL Delhi and Chandigarh, along with NSG experts, inspected the debris and collected samples to determine the exact cause of the explosion. They also interacted with local officials during the assessment.
The blast occurred when around 360 kg of explosives—brought from Faridabad as part of a larger seizure of 3,000 kg of ammonium nitrate and other materials linked to a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) “white-collar terror module”—accidentally detonated during a sampling process inside a shed within the police station compound.
The impact damaged multiple vehicles and nearby residential houses, and the explosion was reportedly heard across major parts of Srinagar.
Among those killed were a Special Investigation Agency (SIA) official, three forensic experts, two crime-scene photographers, two revenue officials involved in the probe, and a tailor working with the team.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident, clarifying there was no terror involvement in the explosion.
“The sampling of explosives had been underway for the last two days. The J&K Police successfully dismantled a major terror network operating across India and prevented numerous attacks. This unfortunate incident does not have any terror conspiracy or external link,” the LG said, while commending the police for busting the module.
